Movie Review: The LEGO Movie

Lord Business and Vitruvius

It was a couple of years ago that the LEGO Movie was announced, and in the time since, I was a bit concerned about the production. The LEGO Group was going through a cycle of disappointments, including the shuttering of the LEGO Universe game and the DesignbyMe custom set creation website. A movie was a nice idea, but how was it going to be made? What was the story? With the information that slowly came out as production continued, there were a few spots of brightness (cute animation), but still a lot that was a mystery. With that mystery, I was a bit worried.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. The LEGO Movie was a movie that had something for kids and adults and most importantly, has a heart. TLM could have been a cash grab, but it was a heart tug. For those who do build, it’s also a love letter.

Emmett and Metalbeard

The movie follows the journey of Emmett (voiced by Chris Pratt), a minifigure who is a normal, plain person in his universe - in this case, a real LEGO Universe. After an accident while chasing Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), he is mistaken for the Special, the minifigure that could stop the villain of the movie, Lord Business (Will Ferrell) from dominating the universe. But to do that, he needs to journey….

The characters he meets along the way are all different and fun, or funny (Batman, voiced by Will Arnett)), ranging from the wise mage Virtruvius (great name and voice, by Morgan Freeman) to Unikitty, (Allison Brie) a unicorn-kitty. Really. The bad guys are robots and Bad Cop/Good Cop, (Liam Neeson).

DC Heroes
The places he visits are areas based on LEGO themes, and are all well-realized, from a Western land to a, um…video gamey land to a city. In terms of design, the movie was astonishing. Everything looked LEGO-built…well, almost everything.

The plot moves at a brisk pace, and is surprisingly deep. You see, EmmettbecametheSpecialwhenhegotthePieceofResistanceandistakenbyWyldstylewhowastheMasterbuilderwhowaslookingforthelostpiece—fromthereEmmettandWyldstylegotoliterallyanotherrealmtoseeVirtruviusandtosavealltherealms…got it? That’s should give you an idea of how fast it is. The jokes are flung just as fast, so keep a sharp eye and ear. Also, keep an eye on Batman during the movie, and an ear at the end. He’s a musician. A Bat- er, bad one, but his song at the end is hysterical.

Families will initially be taken in by the worlds and characters, but by the third act, the plot changes to something much more thoughtful. At that point, the movie becomes a rumination and then a celebration of what makes the LEGO brick so special…the brick is more than just a toy. Literally. And how we play and create with it is MUCH more important.

That realization makes the movie a delightful movie to watch. See the movie, and see it with your family. And then see it again, to catch all the visuals you missed the first time!

BrickJournal 28 will have a look at the set designs behind the LEGO Movie - it'll be out in March!

From Julie Estrada of LEGOLAND California:

 movie star and display

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2014) - Everything is awesome at  LEGOLAND® California Resort as the family theme park opened the doors to its newest attraction featuring a behind-the-scenes look at “The LEGO® Movie” with THE LEGO® MOVIE EXPERIENCE.  This off-spring from the hit movie gives guests a chance to step onto a LEGO® soundstage, see actual movie footage along with interviews with the cast and explore some of the awesome LEGO models which helped inspire the new and completely original 3D animated adventure that grossed more than $200 million in its first two weeks in the worldwide box office.

Actor Jadon Sand, who plays “Finn” and worked alongside Will Ferrell in “The LEGO Movie,” was the special guest at the grand opening ceremony where a giant curtain dropped to reveal THE LEGO MOVIE EXPERIENCE to Park guests for the first time. Sand and his family spent an entire day exploring LEGOLAND California then stayed over at LEGOLAND Hotel prior to the event. “I’m a big fan

of LEGOLAND California so having the opportunity to come here and be the one to officially open THE LEGO MOVIE EXPERIENCE to you all is a big honor. I actually feel like I’m back on the set of the movie…this is awesome!” Sand continued, “It was really an incredible experience to work on such a cool movie, side-by-side with Will Ferrell and even more so, don’t tell Will, but side-by-side with these awesome LEGO models!” After answering some questions from the press, Sand sang a perfect rendition of the movie’s hit song, “Everything is awesome!”

THE LEGO MOVIE EXPERIENCE features more than 1200 LEGO models made out of more than three million LEGO bricks. It took a team of ten Model Builders more than 2000 hours to assemble and a team of four Model Builders six weeks to reassemble in Carlsbad. The new attraction offers guests an up-close look at the famous worlds featured in the film such as Bricksburg, Middle Zealand, Old West, Cloud Cuckooland and Octane Tower.  Movie fans can stand in the same place as Finn and his father, “Lord Business,” played by Ferrell, and imagine themselves in the scene that has become famous in just weeks. THE LEGO MOVIE EXPERIENCE offers a unique thrill that can be enjoyed by LEGO fans of all ages.

“The LEGO Movie” tells an original 3D computer animated story about Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously unprepared, and turns out to be a lot more special than he ever imagined.

The Idea Book 6000 Experience: Completing the Dream

Additional Photos from Idea Book 6000

The LEGO Idea Book (#6000) depicts the story of two mini-figures, Mary and Bill, as they venture through three major LEGO themes of town, space and castle from the 1980s. My wife and I created and displayed the town scenes at the 2012 Bricks by the Bay show, a LEGO convention in Santa Clara, California. We reconstructed each of the eleven major town scenes from this Idea Book interconnecting them with road baseplates and creating rolling green mountains made out of LEGO bricks in the background. You can read more in our first article, The Idea Book Experience: Building a Childhood Dream in the June 2013 (Issue 24) issue of BrickJournal. In the last scene of our display, Mary and Bill were watching a classic space movie, suggesting that their adventures would continue in outer space. Our building adventure also continued.

In order to complete Mary and Bill’s story, we built four more major scenes from the Idea Book. This included a classic space scene, an alien planet scene, a castle scene, and a final scene where they tell all their town friends of their adventures. We were able to finish building the models and extra landscaping in time for the 2013 Bricks by the Bay show in Santa Clara, California. We again created four more of Mary’s diary entries so that the public could read and walk around our display. In the next few days, follow our story and again read about our LEGO building discoveries as we had a blast in retelling Mary and Bill’s space and castle adventures.

Idea Book

The page spread from the Idea Book and...

bill and mary layout

our built layout.

Right after Mary and Bill concluded watching the movie, they befriended a classic white spaceman who loaned them a spaceship so that they could take a cruise to the moon. The spaceship they used was actually the LEGO Space Cruiser set (#924 in Europe and #487 in USA). We wanted to have stars and a sandy landscape as was shown in the Idea Book picture and used LEGO bricks to create this. We learned of a very cool trick that can be done with rigid and non-bendable LEGO bricks. There is a small gap between bricks that allows you to actually “bend” the connected bricks to make curves. We used this trick to make a curved field of stars by using 1x2 black bricks and “sprinkling” 1x1 trans-clear round plates at various random places to make both individual stars and star clusters. As you can see, we tried to match the star clusters in the same regions of space as in the Idea Book.

For the planet in the distance we used the globe from the Star War’s set #9678 Twin-pod Cloud Car and Bespin and hung it from the starfield using some transparent rod pieces, giving it a 3D effect. The globe looked as if it was suspended in the starfield. For the landscape we used tan bricks and plates randomly placed to create hills and to give that sandy undulating look.

baseplates

One interesting thing to note for all the classic space fans is that we found that LEGO had at least three variations of the classic space landing plate released in the 1980s. The one on the far right is probably the original design. In the Idea Book it looks like they used the one on the right exclusively.

space base

When we were building the rocket base the challenge was to build it with only the pieces from the Space Command Center set (#926 from Europe and #493 from USA) and from the Alpha-1 Rocket Base set (#920 from Europe and #483 from USA). We nearly did it except that we had to use a few blue bricks from elsewhere to complete the rocket base.

wheel

Another thing to note is that the metal-detector vehicle uses the classic red wheels but it also has a classic 2x2 single motorcycle wheel at the front. This is hard to see from looking at the Idea Book and so we have a separate photo here to show the element shape.

shirt

Still another very cool fact is that one of the spaceships from the Idea Book was used on a T-shirt that you could buy from the Lego-Shop-at-Home service back in the 1980s.

spacemen

You will notice that there are some classic grey space astronauts in our scene but you will not find them in the Idea Book! In fact LEGO never made classic grey space mini-figures. LEGO made red, white, yellow, blue, and black classic space mini-figures but not grey. We had some plain grey torsos, helmets, and grey legs and so all we needed was the space logo. We scanned the logo and printed them on sticky paper and applied them to the torso. Neat!

vehicles

Here are close-ups of some of our vehicle recreations.

And below are close-up photos of our recreation of the large space from the Idea Book that used elements from the famous Galaxy Explorer set (#928 in Europe and #497 in USA). Also, shown is the space lab.

Aliens Land!

Idea Book

Here is the Idea Book layout and...

bill and mary layout

and here is the built layout.

Fixed

After Mary and Bill helped the aliens fix their cool spaceship that crashed on the moon, they traveled to the alien’s home planet. The alien spaceship is comprised of classic space and town pieces, including some elements from the Police Headquarters set (#381 in Europe and #588 in USA).

In our scene we had two alien spaceships fly within a second starfield made out of LEGO bricks, closely matching those spaceships shown in the Idea Book. The alien’s planet was a rocky grey landscape and so we built grey mountains out of plates and bricks.

aliencraft

The alien scene is probably one of the harder ones to build as there are not many viewing angles in the Idea Book for several of the models, notably the space base on the left. For this space base we created the back side as shown, with red bricks and grey plates for stairs.

alien architecture

We also liked the yellow and black building as it has a creative use of slope bricks to make angled windows that gives the alien planet that out-of-this-world look!

alien arboretum

Also, there are a few other models in our scene that is not in the main alien scene but are shown on other pages of the Idea Book. In particular, the white arbor-like model is shown in only one place in the Idea Book. As you can see, this model uses antennas on the top of the roof. We found these antennas to actually have two designs, one of which can stick onto the end of a torch-gun piece and the other design cannot. The antenna cannot be used in this manner because the inner hole size is smaller.

roundels

Can you find which one would work with the torch-gun piece? You are right; it is the one on the left.

The alien mini-figures were fun to build. They were a mixture of older non-movable mini-figures, small LEGO pieces, and movable ones with their torso reversed. Take a closer look at their arms and you will see that their elbows are bent backwards – definitely alien!

spacecraft

Here are some photos of the alien ships flying in outer space. You can see that we used some bar and hinge pieces to hold the spaceships in mid-air!

alien building

To recreate the transport vehicle on the single blue track shown in the background of the alien space scene, we used a blue hinge brick to mount the seat on top of a bunch of red plates, connected sideways in a SNOT (studs-not-on-top) fashion.

alien vehicles

Here are a few more photos of other alien vehicles from our display for your enjoyment.

the built layout.

In the next scene, Mary and Bill leave the alien planet and arrive at a medieval castle planet. Because they flew to the castle by spaceship, we decided to have the castle scene be a medieval planet, naming it C375 after the 1978 LEGO Yellow Castle set (#375 in Europe and #6075 in USA). The courtyard castle appears to be composed of the Fire Station set #374 that had 4 red doors and the Yellow Castle set that had 2 red doors. Also, the LEGO slope pieces with stickers, like the red/white/blue awning came from the Town House set (#376 in Europe and #560 in USA).

castle

For our display, we took the liberty of creating a luscious waterfall landscape for the castle on the hill and created a dirt road using brown plates making a trail from the hill to the courtyard. We topped off the greenery with mountains, trees and bushes.

castle

In our recreation of the courtyard castle, we applied the crown chest armor sticker to some of the shields as was done in the Idea Book. You can tell that these stickers were meant for the chest armor since they are rectangular in shape rather than the triangular shield shape.
Can you find the mini-figures that have this rectangle-shape crown sticker for their shield?

LEGO Systems Blends Physical and Digital Play with New LEGO® FUSION

-New Play Experience Moves Children Seamlessly Back and Forth Between Physical and Virtual LEGO® Worlds Via Hands-On Brick Building and App Gaming to Delight LEGO Builders and Casual Gamers Alike-

From LEGO Public Relations

NEW YORK (June 19, 2014)– LEGO Systems, Inc., makers of the world’s leading construction toys, today introduced LEGO® FUSION, a play experience that combines traditional LEGO brick play with familiar app-based game themes. LEGO FUSION leverages new technologies—and children’s fascination with them—to create an entirely new way to engage in LEGO brick building and app game play for children ages 7 and up. Available later this summer, the LEGO FUSION collection will include four distinct titles: LEGO FUSION Town Master, LEGO FUSION Battle Towers, LEGO FUSION Create & Race and LEGO FUSION Resort Designer.

Each LEGO FUSION experience consists of a distinct set of LEGO bricks, a corresponding free downloadable app and the new FUSION capture plate, a small brick building plate with a printed design that enables a smart phone or tablet’s camera to identify the size and colors of the LEGO bricks built onto it. In response to game prompts, children build vertically in 2-D on the FUSION capture plate, enabling the app to ‘see,’ import and transform the creation into 3-D in the digital world.

“Children have always imagined their LEGO creations as immersive worlds which come to life for hours of role-play and adventure,” said Ditte Bruun Pedersen, senior design manager, LEGO Future Lab. “Recently, smart phones and tablets have become a popular platform for empowering game mechanisms that kids love. LEGO FUSION brings these two favorite play patterns together in an experience where real-life LEGO builds come to life in a virtual game, inspiring creativity, strategy, and the pride of creation.”

To Win, Step Away from the Screen
Once a child’s creation has been imported into the game, a series of challenges and interactions requires that players turn away from the device and return to the real world to use their LEGO bricks to build new solutions in order to move game play forward. Each game encourages this back-and-forth between physical and virtual, keeping children engaged in both worlds.

“In our research, we heard repeatedly from parents that they are constantly battling ‘zombie gaze,’ the experience when their children are immersed in their device screens for large blocks of time,” said Pedersen. “We developed LEGO FUSION with this challenge in mind, creating a play experience that keeps children entertained with the kind of app gameplay they love while giving real reasons to return to the brick pile to creatively build.”

Build + Capture + App Gaming: the LEGO FUSION Play Experience
Each LEGO FUSION box consists of a set of LEGO bricks, a free downloadable app game and a new FUSION capture plate—a small brick plate with a printed design code that enables mobile and tablet cameras to identify the size and colors of the LEGO bricks built onto the plate. Children build vertically in 2D, in dimensions up to 16 bricks high by 16 bricks wide (the optimal size for capture by a smartphone or tablet camera) on the special FUSION capture plate, which enables the app to ‘see,’ import and transform the 2D physical build into the 3D game environment, where creations come to life in the game. As children play virtually, the game prompts them to go back to their brick pile to build new solutions to continue the virtual adventure.

Each LEGO FUSION product offers a distinct play experience. The four products launching this year are:

LEGO FUSION Town Master

playing the game

In this simulation game, players create and rule their own LEGO town, first by building it with LEGO bricks,

then by capturing it

and importing it to the game.

play

Children build everything from houses to a pizzeria, fire station and bike shop while completing errands and missions like catching robbers, fighting fires and skateboarding. To keep the minifigure citizens happy, players solve problems through physical building and earn points to gain access to more structures, and even run additional towns.

LEGO FUSION Battle Towers

Players build a tower and defend it against attack so they can rule the kingdom.

First, players design the Battle Towers with real LEGO pieces,

play

Next, players choose tower defenders like wizards and archers and battle against evil warriors, skeleton armies, and more. If a tower is damaged in battle, players can repair the damage with a timed build with the game’s real LEGO bricks.

LEGO FUSION Create & Race

box

game
In this racing game, players get behind the wheel and virtually drive the cars that they create with real LEGO bricks. Once a custom vehicle is digitally designed, physically built, and imported to the game, it can be optimized for success in racing, demolition or stunts. Players learn that every brick shape and color on the vehicle matters for performance. Three themed courses offer endless challenges unlocked by physical LEGO builds, and children can even ghost race against friends to top the leaderboard.

LEGO FUSION Resort Designer

game

game
Players help the LEGO Friends design new vacation houses, shops and activities for Ambersands Beach. After building 2-D facades, capturing them and importing them to the game, players can design the interiors of 3-D digital structures, such as an aquarium, surf shop and beach houses. Children can unlock new levels and build more resorts by completing missions like rescuing dolphins, riding horses, surfing and other resort activities.

A truly mobile game experience, LEGO FUSION allows players access to their builds and game progress anywhere. Using their LEGO ID, players simply sign in on any compatible device and access their gallery and game play from within the LEGO FUSION app.
Beginning in September, LEGO FUSION will incorporate the ability for players to access their digital LEGO creations and game play anywhere. Using their LEGO ID, players can sign in on any compatible device and access their gallery and game play from within the LEGO FUSION app.

Each LEGO FUSION product includes:
• more than 200 LEGO bricks and elements
• custom LEGO FUSION capture plate
• a get-started guide
• a corresponding LEGO FUSION app. App games were developed by TT Games, makers of the range of best-selling LEGO video games. The Qualcomm® Vuforia™ mobile vision platform enables the games to ‘see’ the LEGO bricks and make possible the transition from physical to digital. Each app is a free download from the Apple, Google, Samsung, or Amazon App Store for Apple iOS and Android devices.

LEGO FUSION Town Master, LEGO FUSION Battle Towers, and LEGO FUSION Create & Race will launch in August 2014; LEGO FUSION Resort Designer will launch in September 2014. Suggested age is 7 and up and each will be available for $34.99 in LEGO Stores and Toys”R”Us stores in the U.S., as well as online at shop.LEGO.com and at toysrus.com.

Sneak a Look at the LEGO Comic that will be at San Diego Comic-Con!

It's July and time for San DiegoCOmic-Con to turn the city into a mecca for comics and pop culture fans all over the world! The LEGo Group has been there and has become famous (or infamous) for the many giveaways it has during the convention. This year is no different, with minifigures being given out and exclusive set being sold at the event.

If you are going to be at Comic-Con this year, you'll be able to pick up a free LEGO comic at a signing at the LEGO booth on Saturday, July 26 from 5pm-6pm if you are not attending BrickJournal's panel, Beyond the Brick: A Look at the LEGO Brickumentary, which is the same time. The comic will be signed by Paul Lee, artist, and writer rachel Lareau. Paul explains:

"I have been long hoping to do a serialized version of the comics I’ve been making for the Club Magazine. As luck would have, my stars aligned and this year I got the chance.

The Club Magazine asked me to do just that. I’ve spent the past few months working on the 24 page story. I also got to do a fold out cover. So for the outside cover, I decided to put Batman alone on the front cover and have the JLA and Bat sidekicks on the wrap around back cover. On the fold out portion, I featured the Rogues Gallery that was used in the book.

rogues gallery

The inside fold out cover was the most fun to do. I got to do a group shot of DC Heroes and Villains. I got to pick the line ups and choose how to depict some of them. It was really a lot of fun to do.

heroes and villians

On the inside, I also got to do a pin-up page and I had carte-blanche. So, in honor of Batman’s 75th anniversary, I did a LEGO version of the original Detective Comics no. 27 that was the first appearance of Batman. I even age it in Photoshop to make it look like a vintage comic."

Looks like I will be ending our panel a little early!

THE LEGO GROUP REVEALS DETAILS OF JANUARY 1, 2015 GLOBAL LEGO® BIONICLE® LAUNCH

-Richly Reimagined Storyline Will Engage Fans of All Ages-

NEW YORK, New York City Comic Con (October 9, 2014)– The LEGO Group, makers of the world’s leading construction toys, today unveiled detailed product information, principle graphic design and a video short for the LEGO® BIONICLE franchise onstage at New York City Comic Con. Featuring a range of constructible action figures, LEGO BIONICLE is based on a new and engaging storyline that will be available globally on January 1, 2015.

“We are thrilled to announce the relaunch of the LEGO BIONICLE franchise, which was one of our most popular LEGO franchises and our first ‘constraction’ or constructible action figure line,” said Michael McNally, Senior Director of Brand Relations, The LEGO Group. “We are eager to introduce and immerse a new generation of children in this rich character-driven world and can’t wait for fans of all ages to interact with the new story.”

Can the Toa Save Okoto From the Latest Threat?
The new storyline takes place on the mythical island of Okoto, where the forces of darkness are on the move and the evil Makuta is once again materializing.
